Random Shooting at Walgreens Leaves One Dead

MADERA - Shots rang out at the West Cleveland Avenue Walgreens in Madera on Monday evening around 9:30 p.m. One employee was killed, and Madera Police have one suspect in custody. Little is known at this time about 30-year-old Narciso Gallardo Fernandez, who drove from his hometown of Pixley in search of a pharmacy to shoot up, as he appears to have a grudge against that type of business.

Walgreen’s employee Erick Velasquez was in the process of calling 911 when he was allegedly shot with a bullet from Fernandez’s weapon. Police say Fernandez emptied his gun in the store and was in the process of reloading when Madera Police took him into custody. It appears the killing was random as police say there was no known relation between the two men, nor does the suspect have any ties with the city of Madera.

Surveillance video inside Walgreens captured the suspect firing his weapon, including shooting out one of the video cameras. The suspect appears to be speaking on camera, but the audio is inaudible. As customers and other employees were trying to leave the store, Fernandez shot at them also. No one else was injured in this incident.

Madera Police Chief Gino Chiaramonte stated that it appears Fernandez drove more than 80 miles from Pixley to the store located off Freeway 99 and Cleveland Avenue, arriving just after 9:30 p.m. on Monday. Fernandez was taken into custody outside the store in the parking lot, which was captured on police body camera footage.

Chiaramonte said that Velazquez leaves behind a wife and two children.

Walgreens released a statement on the incident, saying, "We are deeply saddened by last night's tragic event, which resulted in the death of one of our team members. Our thoughts and prayers are with their loved ones during this difficult time. The safety of our customers and team members is our top priority, and we are working with local authorities in their investigation.
