TULARE – The world’s largest light sculpture display has returned to Tulare, with new lanterns representing “The Magic of the Seasons,” including a massive new Winter Castle lantern and a new glow-in-the-dark activity area for children.
Global Winter Wonderland, which debuted in Tulare in 2015, opened on Friday, Nov. 25, and will be open select days through Jan. 8. For details and to purchase tickets, visit www.globalwonderland.com.
Winter is a collection of intricate displays of holiday scenes including Santa’s Village and Santa’s train, penguins and polar bears.
The returning lanterns in the International City area of the fairgrounds, include the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Statue of Liberty, King Tut, the Eiffel Tower and a Dutch windmill.
The lanterns are made with an iron frame, draped in silk. The Tulare displays will require 160 tons of steel and 485,000 square feet of silk. Over 100 people are on site now creating the lanterns by hand.
In addition to steel and silk, the lanterns are created with recycled materials, such as recycled water bottles.
Global Winter Wonderland is the brainchild of founder Lulu Huang, whose goal is to celebrate diverse cultures and break down social barriers and misconceptions.
The event was held at Great America in Santa Clara in 2011 and 2012. In 2013, the lanterns were displayed in Atlanta, Georgia, before returning to California. It was located at the Sacramento County Fairgrounds in 2014 and 2015, and debuted in Tulare in 2015 to great response.
The entertainment will also be multicultural, with performers from Russia, Argentina, China, Africa and other nations around the world. Entertainment is free with paid gate admission. Global Winter Wonderland at the Tulare County Fairgrounds will feature international food, photos with Santa and the new mascot Penny, and a full carnival with thrill rides and games for all ages.
