FoodLink of Tulare County to Hold Annual Food Day Event on October 28th

EXETER - Every October, Americans will attend thousands of events across the country to celebrate Food Day – an event that celebrates real food, and creates a movement towards improved food systems and policies.  FoodLink for Tulare County will be hosting their Annual Food Day Event on October 28, 2017, at 611 2nd St., Exeter, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. – a free community event.

Opening remarks by California State Assemblyman, Devon Mathis, will commence at 10 a.m., followed by cooking demonstrations at 10:30 a.m., 11:15 a.m., and noon. “A local chef will be demonstrating how to make soup, waffles, and gnocchi, using a wide variety of ingredients,” Nicole Celaya, Community Food Security and System Development Director, said.  “All the food and activities are free to the community.”

At noon, local community women will host a roll-your-own tortilla station. Throughout the day,   the Experimental Quesadilla Lab, a statewide traveling project that blends food, art, and culture, will engage community members “…to create their own, unique quesadillas,” Celaya said, “and beginning at 12:30 p.m., lunch will include a free make-your-own taco bar for all participants.”

Other activities include: a martial arts demonstration by Central Valley Martial Arts at 10:15 a.m., Zumba demonstration at 11 a.m., and Buddy Jones and Friends: An Interactive African Drumming Experience at noon.

From 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., FoodLink for Tulare County will be hosting Nutrition on the Go, which provides fresh fruits and vegetables in a friendly, farmer’s market style setting at no cost.

Event goers can have fun sampling different types of foods throughout the day. Sabor de Tocumbo, a local business, will have artisanal fresh fruit paletas to sample.

“A special thanks needs to go out to Lowe’s Store #1611, and volunteers from their Lowe’s Heroes Program, for donating time, labor, and material for garden tables, produce displays, and a paved walkway for this year’s Food Day,” Celaya said.

Food Day is all about celebrating food, nutrition, and family, with kid-friendly activities throughout the event. “We will have a smoothie bike, ring toss, obstacle course, picture booth, bounce house, chalk art, hand prints and bench painting,” Celaya said. “Food Day is where food builds health, community, and skills.”
