MADERA -  Madera Police Department received a report from Madera High School of a threat of a school shooting. The threat was written on a bathroom wall at the school.   A number of students were interviewed and the investigation remains ongoing. During lunch today, the school staff was informed and asked for any relevant information and advised to be vigilant for the safety of all.

While police say the threat was not specific, reports to BVN are the targets threatened are students who have bullied and teachers who have turned their backs to the bullying. Police do not believe this to be a credible threat, however all threats of this nature must be taken seriously and  there will be an increase of security at the school for the foreseeable future.

Threats of this kind are becoming more frequent across the nation due to the prevalence of social media and its ability to cause disruption and panic.  To combat this negative trend, Madera Unified is asking the public to stay vigilant and contact law enforcement. Although this threat is being taken seriously, the district will carry on with the quality education of their students. The safety and welfare of each child is paramount to the district.

The originator of this threat intends to cause this level of anxiety and Madera Unified School District says they will do all they can to provide a safe and peaceful school day. If a student or students are found to be guilty, they will be subject to the full extent of California Education Code, which could include expulsion, and potential criminal repercussions with law enforcement.

These threats, credible or not, have strong punitive consequences.  Madera Unified places student safety as its highest priority and will work with law enforcement to ensure the safety of our students and staff.
