MADERA - Late Monday morning, shortly after 11 am, the Madera County Sheriff’s Office received a call from a local cleaning company employee reporting a family disturbance with shots fired and possible injury at a residence in the 16000 block of D Street in Madera.
Law enforcement personnel arrived on the scene and established a perimeter around the house to attempt to make contact with the suspect inside. After a period of time, authorities established communication with an adult male inside the home and entered. Once inside, deputies discovered a deceased adult male, the victim of an apparent gunshot wound. The remaining adult male, age 86, was taken into custody and transported to a regional medical center for evaluation.
Out of extreme caution, area schools were temporarily locked while emergency personnel secured the residence. At no time were students or school personnel under a direct threat.
Based on preliminary witness statements, detectives have determined the involved parties were a father and son. The father lives at the residence on D Street while the son was visiting from out of the area. During a scheduled carpet cleaning, an employee overheard a noise, went to offer help, and discovered the father and son in a physical struggle over a firearm. The son requested the employee call 9-1-1 for assistance. The employee remained on site and is cooperating with investigators.
Detectives are currently investigating this case as a homicide. Anyone with information about this case is asked to call (559) 676-7770. Names are being withheld at this time, pending completion of notification of next of kin.
