Stanley John Matli (77) was born on January 24, 1940 to Paul and Imogene Matli in Merced, California. His Aunt Lena and Uncle Lefty Gai played an important role in raising Stanley. He graduated from Chowchilla Union High School in 1957. He received his BS from the University of San Francisco in 1961. After earning a teaching credential at Fresno State College, he taught at various elementary, middle and high schools in the San Joaquin Valley.
During this time he also served 8 years in the Army Reserve. In 1971 he received a masters degree in library science at San Jose State. He worked several years at the Lodi Public Library before he took a position at the Madera County Library. He was known as “Stan the Answer Man” during his 24 year career at Madera. Stan married Rebecca Jennings in 2001.
Stan served many years on the board of the Madera Arts Council, was an officer in the Sons of Italy and member of the Italo-American Club. During his retirement Stan and his wife enjoyed traveling and spending time with his friends and family. He is survived by wife, Rebecca, his brothers Fred and John, cousins Joanna DeWall and John Gai and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be on Monday, January 1, 2018 from 4 to 6 PM at Jay Chapel in Madera. Recitation of the Rosary will be on Tuesday, January 2, 2018 at 9:30 AM at St. Columba Catholic Church in Chowchilla followed by Celebration of the Funeral Mass at 10 AM. Interment will follow at Chowchilla Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers remembrances can be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation, Madera Arts Council, or Madera County Animal Shelter.
