Mrs Mary J. Harlow Rose (87)

Mrs. Mary J. Harlow Rose (87) A native of the Usona area of Mariposa, Mary was born on Dec. 4, 1933, to Maude Leonard Harlow and Ed Harlow at the family home ranch on Usona Road. Her maternal grandfather was Archibald Campbell Leonard, a noted guide and one of the first rangers at Yosemite National Park. Leonard accompanied President Teddy Roosevelt and John Muir on their 1903 tour of Yosemite.

Her father, Ed Harlow, was one of the first Native-Americans in the state of California to be elected to a county seat when he was elected to the Mariposa County Board of Supervisors in 1936. The family relocated to Raymond in 1946 where she lived until graduation when she moved to Madera to work as a Bell Telephone operator.

Mary met her future husband, Russell, at a dance in Raymond and they married in 1952. As part of his military career, they lived in numerous locations across the country. She moved back to be with her family in Raymond to await the birth of their daughter, Kimberly, while Russ was service in the Philippines. Upon Russ’ retirement from the Air Force in 1970 the family returned to Raymond.


She was employed by the Madera County Sheriff’s Department as a Dispatcher until her retirement. After retiring. Mary and Russ enjoyed traveling across the US and visiting multiple countries.

Mary was proceeded in death by her husband Russell Neil Rose as well as three brothers and two sisters.

Mary is survived by two daughters, Kimberly Rose and Nancy Hurd of Coarsegold and her sister, Virginia Parrott of Raymond, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday, February 24, 2021, at 2 p.m. at the Raymond Cemetery, Road 607 in Raymond, California. However, due to COVID-19 restrictions, the services will be limited to 50 people.

A Celebration of Life reception will be held on March 14, 2021, at 12:00 at Footman Park in Raymond.
