Former Madera County Superintendent of Education, Mr. Norman M. Gould, passed away on Monday, November 14, 2011 at the age of 92. He was a native of Helena, MT and a resident of Madera, CA for the past 84 years.
Mr. Gould had a 36 year career in Education. He taught at North Fork Elementary school for 3 years, was the Assistant County Superintendent for 9 years and for the next 24 years Norman was the Superintendent of Madera County Schools.
The Gould Educational Center was named in his honor because he introduced legislation at the State level to start and establish Special Education in California. He was on the board of directors for California Teachers Retirement Association for 12 years, president of the board for 2 years.
Norman was also on the board of directors for the Pismo Coast Village RV Resort for 30 years, president of the board for 9. He was a veteran of WWII serving his country in the United States Air Force and a member of the Madera Avenue Bible Church.
Norman was preceded in death by his two sisters and one brother. He is survived by his wife of 66 years Sue Gould, his son Ray Gould both of Madera, his two daughters, Kathy Beckman of Irvine, CA and Ruth Smith of Madera. He also leaves behind four grandchildren, Jason Smith, Janna Mooney, Tim Beckman and John Beckman, and four great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on: Monday, November 21, 2011 from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Jay Chapel, Madera, CA. Funeral Service will be held on: Tuesday, November 22, 2011, 2:00 PM at Arbor Vitae Cemetery, Madera, CA
