FRESNO - What do we know about 2018 Fresno State football schedule? We know that Fresno State will open its 2018 campaign with four nonconference FBS games over the first five weeks, starting at Bulldog Stadium on Sept. 1. And its Mountain West schedule will mirror 2017, but with the host-site flipped for all eight opponents. Five of the Bulldogs' 2018 opponents qualified for a bowl game and the 12 collectively went 71-81 (.467).
September 1 vs. Idaho (Big Sky)
Fresno State will open its season at home for the second consecutive year. In 2018, the Bulldogs will start the season against Idaho, a team that went 4-8 (3-5 Sun Belt) in 2017 during its final year as an FBS team - they will kick off 2018 as a member of the Big Sky Conference. Fresno State owns an 11-4 all-time series advantage against the Vandals; they last played in 2013, which was a 61-14 victory for the Bulldogs at the Kibbie Dome. The Bulldogs will seek their 11th-straight win against Idaho on Sept. 1.
September 8 at Minnesota (Big Ten)
The Bulldogs' first road game of 2018 will be against a Power 5 opponent, Minnesota of the Big Ten. Minnesota was 5-7 (2-7 Big Ten) a season ago, sweeping its nonconference schedule versus Buffalo, Oregon State and Middle Tennessee State to start the season before dropping seven of nine in Big Ten play. The 2018 meeting will be the first between the two programs, it is also the first of a home-and-home series (2018-19).
September 15 at UCLA (Pac-12)
To conclude the road portion of the Bulldogs' nonconference schedule, Fresno State will travel 224 miles south to the Rose Bowl on Sept. 15 to face UCLA for the first time since 2008. The Bruins will seek to improve on a 6-7 (4-5 Pac-12) campaign in 2017 under newly-hired head coach Chip Kelly. Despite a just a six win season, UCLA was 6-0 at home last year. UCLA owns the series' all-time advantage 6-2, but the Bulldogs have won two-straight – a 36-31 win at the Rose Bowl in 2008 and a 17-9 bowl game win in 2003 (Silicon Valley Classic).
September 29 vs. Toledo (MAC)
On Sept. 29, Fresno State will play the first of three 10-plus win teams they are scheduled to face in 2018. Toledo, who went 11-3 (7-1 MAC) in 2017, will travel to Fresno for the first time since its first-ever meeting with the Bulldogs in 2005. Fresno State owns the all-time series by a slim 2-1 margin, having won games in 2005 and 2008, and lost its most recent pairing in a 52-17 defeat at Toledo during the 2016 season.
Note: 2018 marks the first season since 2008 that Fresno State's nonconference schedule does not feature an FCS opponent (Rutgers, Toledo, UCLA and Wisconsin).
