Fresno State's Juju Hughes Named MW Defensive Player of the Week

FRESNO – Fresno State sophomore defensive back Juju Hughes was named the Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week on Monday. The is the first time a Bulldog has been named by the league a player of the week since Kyrie Wilson received the same honor on November 10, 2014.

Hughes played an integral role in Fresno State's 27-10 win at San Jose State this past Saturday, stuffing the stat sheet with six tackles (four solo), 2.0 tackles for a loss, 1.0 sacks, one forced fumble, one interception and one quarterback hurry.

SAN JOSE - The Fresno State football team regained control of the Valley Trophy on Saturday evening with a 27-10 victory at San Jose State, topping the Spartans behind three first-half touchdowns, and a stifling defense that allowed just 205 yards and forced four turnovers.

"It's always nice to come away with a victory," said head coach Jeff Tedford. "We can get a lot better, but it's great to bring the trophy home. That's something we talked all week about, and we take pride in that."

Fresno State Swimming & Diving Opens Season Hosting Chick-Fil-A Invitational Friday and Saturday

FRESNO - The Fresno State swimming & diving team opens its season hosting 2016 national runner-up Cal - and its three Olympians - as well as Nevada, San Jose State, and San Diego State in the Chick-Fil-A Invitational Friday and Saturday at the Fresno State Aquatics Center. The meet is sponsored by Chick-Fil-A Fashion Fair.

The invitational begins at 11 a.m. Friday with two sessions and will conclude with a third session starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday. There will be 18 swimming events over the two days while both the 3-meter and 1-meter diving competitions will take place on Friday. Admission is free for all Fresno State home meets, and fans are encouraged to wear pink for breast cancer awareness weekend. The first 100 fans on Saturday will receive free pink swim caps.

Fresno State Captures Fifth Place Finish at Nick Watney Invitational

FRESNO  – After ending play on Monday in sixth place, Fresno State fluctuated between fourth and seventh during the final round on Tuesday en route to a fifth place overall finish at the Nick Watney Invitational. The ‘Dogs were led by Justin Avery and Alex Lee, both of whom finished tied for ninth after shooting a three-day score of 218, 5-over-par.

“There was some good, there was some bad,” head coach Chad Spencer said. I don’t think our guys realized how hard this golf course (Sunnyside CC) was going to be. You play it on a day-to-day basis and you don’t get to see it in tournament condition very often, but we had some good stretches. I’m really happy for Justin and Alex, who didn’t have their A stuff this week, but were able to claim top 10 finishes.”

Fresno State Football: Bulldogs Dispatch Nevada 41-21 to Win Mountain West Opener

FRESNO - Behind 504 yards of total offense and three first half touchdowns from junior wide receiver KeeSean Johnson, the Fresno State Bulldogs won its Mountain West opener over Nevada 41-21 on Saturday evening at Bulldog Stadium.

Junior quarterback Marcus McMaryion, making his first start as a Bulldog, had a standout game behind center, passing for 296 yards on 24-of-32 passing and tossed two touchdowns. The Oregon State transfer went 20-of-23 in the first half for 260 yards. Johnson, a Biletnikoff award watch list candidate, made a team-high seven receptions for 104 yards and matched his career-high with three touchdowns. 

High School Football Player Scores Touchdowns While Raising Thousands for Valley Children's Hospital

MADERA RANCHOS - Kaleb Roth, a senior at Liberty High School in Madera, California is going "Beyond the Game" for the sake of children at Valley Children's Hospital in Madera, CA. Kaleb is the running back on his high school football team and a year ago started an initiative called "Beyond the Game".

The goal is to raise $10 for every point the varsity team scores and donate that money to Valley Children's Hospital.  Roth says, "I've been given the opportunity to play football, the game I love, and I know there are a lot of kids who'd love to be able to play this game as well.  I want to use the opportunity I have to reach beyond the game to make their lives a little better somehow."
